Parihaka-Tohu Kakahi and Te Whiti o Rongomai

Kia ora Readers.

Today in class we learning all about Parihaka & Tohu kakahi and Te Whiti o rongomai.

WHO:

Parihaka was founded by kakahi and Te Whiti o Rongomai.

WHERE:

Tohu and Te Whiti wanted peace for their people and they decided to lay down their wapons for their rights through peace.

WHAT:

Tohu and Te Whiti fought the government by getting their followers to do thing such as pull out surveyors pegs or rebuild fences that the government troops pulled down. Meetings were held on the 18th and 19th of each month to talk through issues and ideas

WHEN:

On 5th November 1881,government troops arrested many of the man of Parihaka,including Tohu and Te Whiti. When the man were released back to Parihaka after 1 year and 6 months, they continued their peaceful protests and Te Whiti was arrested again in 1886. 

NOW:

In 2003, Parihaka was visited by representatives of people such as Martin Luther King Jnr, Mahatma Ghandi and of the Japanese peace movement. There remains a small community living around the Parihaka marae and they still meet on the 18th and 19th of each month. 

TOHU KAKAHI AND TE WHITI O RONGOMAI

Tohu and Te Whiti were the leaders of a pa called Parihaka. Parihaka is in region of Taranaki. They started the village as a safe haven for people who wanted a peaceful resolution to the fighting over the land between Maori and Pakeha. Tohu was born in 1810 in a place called Puketapu. Tohu was married to Wairangi and together they had five cildren. Tohu's name meant 'sign'. His sign was the albatross that landed at Tohu's marae and left behind a feather. He saw this as a symbol of peace. Te Whiti was married to hikurangi, who was Wairangi's sister. Te Whiti was named after a comet that is associated with Puke Te Whiti, a hill in the Pouakai Ranges. The Maori see this hill as being a symbol of standing guard over the past, the presnt and the future. Te Whiti was seen as a protector of the people and he often spoke to the people of Parihaka about being patient. Both man were strong advoates of peaceful resolution. The Government of New Zealand arrested the two man as they did not like what the two were doing. They finally released them 1 year and 6 months late. The man then continund to rebuild the villagn of Parihaka.

 What year did Maori men get the vote:  Male Māori Australians were first given the vote through the Commonwealth Franchise Act 1902, which specifically limited voting enrolment to persons of European descent, and aboriginal natives of New Zealand, in an effort to allay New Zealand's concerns about joining the Federation of Australia.

Why did most people thing women should not vote: Anti-suffragists argued that most women did not want the vote. Because they took care of the home and children, they said women did not have time to vote or stay updated on politics. Some argued women lacked the expertise or mental capacity to offer a useful opinion about political issues.

What does the phrase " drinking their wages " mean: Employees must be paid in money (NZ banknotes and coins) unless:

• their employer is the Crown or a local authority, then the employer can choose to pay the employee by cheque
• the employee agrees or asks in writing to be paid by postal order, money order, cheque or bank deposit. If the employee wants to change to be paid in cash, they need to tell their employer in writing. Their employer then has to make the change as soon as possible and within 2 weeks
• the employee is away from the proper or usual place for the payment of their wages, then they can be paid by postal order, money order or cheque
• the employment agreement provides some other form of payment.

Employers can’t tell employees how they must spend their money.

Litmus Paper

 Litumus is a tree lichen fungi and is made into small paper strips or a liquid for testing acids or alkalines. 

1.Blue litmus paper determines if something is acidie. It turns red in solutions with a ph less than 7.

2. Red Litmus paper determines if something is alkaline. It turns blue in solutinos with a ph greater than. 

Materials:

1. Red Litmus paper

2. Blue Litmus paper

3. Sodium Hydroxide

4. Hydrochloric acid

5. Pipette

6. 4 Test tubes

Steps:

1. Rip the litmus paper in half and put half in each test tube.

2. Add 3 drops of hydrochloric acid to the blue litmus paper in test tube 1.

3. Add 3 drops of hydrochloric acid to the red litmus paper in test tube 2.

4. Add 3 drop of Sodium Hydroxide to the blue litmus paper in test tube 3.

5. Add 3 drops of Sodium Hydroxide to the red litmus paper in test tube 4

Findings:

The blue litmus paper with hydrochloric acid went It did not do entering.

One day a girl was not having the best day of her life.Things at school is not so good . So the girl said no i'm not going to do this. So she said mom,dad  i'm not having a good time, can we do something about it? her mom and dad said OK. We will see what we can do. The next day, her mom and dad wet to school to said Mrs green Lily is not good the kids in the classroom Mrs green said i will say that its not OK to do that. Two weeks later Mrs green said that the kids are OK they said that they will stop it. The next week She was good and happy.
